Tsukino-con 2013 Report

Mon Feb 25, 2013, 9:33 AM

Monday morning and Tsukino-con 2013 is officially over! It was an AMAZING weekend and I would say... the best con experience I've had YET!!

:bulletred: COSPLAY LINEUP
Friday: Veronica (Fallout New Vegas)
Saturday: Tali'Zorah (Mass Effect 2-3)
Sunday: Astrid (Dark Brotherhood armor, Skyrim)

:bulletred: THANK-YOUs
First of all, I literally /cannot possibly thank/ !Valky24 enough. If you haven't had the pleasure of meeting Valky before, I don't think you can understand how WONDERFUL and selfless a single person can be. After giving me a deviantart premium membership (), Valky was like "You know you mentioned you wanted to remake your Mehrunes' Razor, do you want me to make one for you??" Well all you cosplayers know how much work goes into prop-making, so that in itself was an INCREDIBLY nice offer. It arrived in the mail a week before the con and I fell MADLY IN LOVE with how awesome and sturdy and gorgeous it was.

BUT THEN. Thursday afternoon before the con another package arrives, and it's the FLIPPIN BLADE OF MOTHERF*CKING WOE. This was a total surprise and my mind is still recovering from how BLOWN it was when I opened the box up. GUYS IT IS LITERALLY PERFECT AND THE BEST THING EVER. So !Valky24, you are a god among men and I feel extremely lucky to have met someone as kind and eternally awesome as you. :glomp:

Secondly, my con buddies. It's always nice to have friends that hang around with you, go to all the panels you want to go to, get photos of you, with you, dig stuff out of your bag when you can't see, fix costume malfunctions, tell you when you've got food on your face............. I could go on and on. You guys not only made the whole weekend a TOTAL BLAST because you are awesome, but I don't think I would have survived without you. LOL! So thanks goes out to Remi and Karmyn who were with me almost 24/7, and Louis and Marlo who were around a bit. This also extends to all the amazing friends I met up with in hallways and lineups and whatnot... Merry, Lauren, Tessa, Ken, Jayden, Chris, + like 100 more people I straight up just can't remember this early on a monday morning. LOL. So thanks to EVERY single person who spoke with me this weekend.... YOU are what made it so much fun!!!

:bulletred: HIGHLIGHTS
One of my favourite moments of the whole con. Sunday as Astrid I was handing out the black hand "We Know" papers. Was chatting with some Skyrim fans and they told me to give one to one of their friends who hadn't gotten one yet. Snuck around the building and ran up behind him as they were leaving, and slipped it into his jacket pocket /without him noticing/. (Reverse pickpocket successful!) Turned around to run the hell out of the there before he saw me and saw that a bunch of people had witnessed me do it and they were like OMG NICE JOB XD Was so awesome and I proceeded to laugh my ass off for the next like, ten minutes.

Also had some professional Star Wars cosplayers tell me they loved my Tali, and I got my buddies to take some awesome photos of me with them... it really made me feel all warm and fuzzy and stuffs *__*

Last year it really became apparent that my favourite after-con photos are the ones of me with other people, so I tried to get as many of those as possible. CAN'T wait to see how they turned out!!!

:bulletred: CONCLUSION
I am SOOOOOOOOO lucky to have so many amazing friends in this scene. I think I spoke to like 100 different people this year - some amazing old friends, some acquaintances, some new folks - I love you all!!!!! I don't think there is any friendlier group of people than you cosplayers!!!

All in all an amazing weekend and I am feeling very warm and fuzzy :3

Kat... I wanted to come back and say I'm sorry. Something almost happened that made me rethink how you just never know when something bads gonna happen to you, and what you'd regret if you, well, weren't around.

If you could, could you send me a note, I'd like to talk to you again. Maybe tell you more about what happened. Only if you're interested. If not, well, just hide this from view.

I'm alright, not hurt or anything, just so you know.

Hey! I really love your Astrid cosplay! c: I was wondering if you could share some details on how you made it, what the materials you used are, etc..? (For an upcoming con, my friend and I are going to be running around as DB Initiates but we're stumped on how to make the armor)

Hey there, thanks a lot :D I did a writeup on how I made it on my coscom page: [link] Check it out! If I missed anything or you have any questions, let me know. It was a fairly tricky costume to get *just* right (mainly the placement of all the red parts on the black) - it really helped to have a dressform to pin things to so that you could see how it looked on an actual human form. I made mine out of vinyl (fake leather), but I always thought in the game it looked more like suede, so that would look cool too. Good luck, and let me know how it turns out :)

I was wondering, would you be willing to take commissions for cosplays? I fell absolutely in love with your Astrid cosplay!

Oh, thank you so much!!!

I've done small commission work in the past but the idea makes me nervous because I always worry that the stuff I make won't be good enough quality... hahaha. When I make costumes for myself, I tend to cut a lot of corners, and I also try to do everything on a low budget so I don't use the best quality materials. Also, I find the matter of deciding what to charge very difficult. I would love to give you suggestions/share my experience if there's anything in particular you're thinking of making, though!
